Lisbon, Portugal

about

An ode to the glorious city of Lisbon, where I had the luck of living for a few months not long ago. Easily one of the most magical cities in the world, I fell in love with it and its wild collection of sounds - old and new, musical and cacophonous. I wrote this using traditional Portuguese music recorded for me by the phenomenal Lisbon-based guitar quintet Marafona, as the basis. I took these and twisted and sculpted them into a new shape I liked. I had to make them my own while still leaving their essence intact.

From there I used a huge assortment of sounds I collected around the city to build much of the rest of the track. Along them: flags snapping against their poles atop the walls of the Moorish Castle in Sintra outside of Lisbon, crowds cheering during the massive Festival de Lisboa, ancient trams chugging uphill, random Fado singers whose songs literally drift anonymously through the night air, quiet murmurs of prayer bonding around the Pantheon, and even a street saxophonist playing in a tunnel near the ocean.

Wanting to tip my hat to that traditional Portuguese sound, I wove in both classical and electric guitar played by Oakland guitarist Robert Nance (robertnancemusic.com), and vocal parts from San Franciscan mezzo-soprano Melinda Becker (melindabecker.com).

The electronic drums were a nod to everything modern about the city - veins of sleek and cutting-edge life shooting through an ancient city. These madly oversaturated drums were definitely a nod to early, lo-fi Apex Twin.
